By going through their entire discography track-by-track, covering their origins in the Seattle scene, their musical development, and how the pop culture context has changed around them, this book will argue that Pearl Jam are not only one the greatest bands of their generation, but one of the greatest bands of all time. Yet for many they remain an artefact of the Nineties, the epitome of the angsty Gen X stereotype. And through it all they keep releasing amazing music. They tour constantly and are renowned for the quality of their live shows. Just as those artists did, Pearl Jam built an intense cult following who feel personally connected to the band. To date they have sold over 30 million albums worldwide, as many as iconic such artists as The Doors, Tom Petty, and Rush. They introduced themselves with one of the biggest-selling and most iconic albums of the decade, and their follow-up albums broke sales records worldwide. Chad Smith would be great in this band.Pearl Jam are the last men standing from great alternative rock explosion of the Nineties. Matt Cameron improved on that a little, but I still feel he's a bit too much of a prog drummer for their sound. Irons' parts come a little bit more from left field, which perhaps should have been better, but I just don't think it was. Ament played really well with Abbruzzese, although you might argue they were more conventional and headed almost toward fusion. I didn't like the work with Jack Irons very much as his groove just didn't seem to click with Jeff Ament all that well. Production is unappealing (except for Present Tense), and Eddie Vedder forgot to write any vocal melodies. They've carved out a niche for themselves even if it feels like the songs aren't connecting as well anymore.Įddie Vedder did great work on the Into the Wild soundtrack. Deep catalog cuts, rotating setlists, long sets, and lots of energy and passion. I do really appreciate what Pearl Jam puts into its live shows, though.
In the end, I find myself going back more to the non-singles (like Oceans) and also to the Mother Love Bone stuff. In essence, it's like Stone Gossard blew threw all he could do in that direction and/or they just didn't use as much of his stuff anymore.
It was the use of more color: wider vocal melodies, occasional fretless bass, and lots of alternate tunings. What was so great about Ten was not the glossy production.
